The Pros of Protecting Your Eyes from UV Damage

We don’t always think about our eyes when we head out in the summer, but they’re just as vulnerable to UV damage as our skin. Whether it’s a quick walk around the block or an afternoon on the soccer field, your eyes are constantly exposed to the sun’s rays.

At Focus Vision Development Center in Camillus, we work with children and adults with vision challenges that can sometimes be made worse by avoidable UV exposure, and we care deeply about protecting the progress our patients make in vision therapy.

How the Sun Damages Your Eyes

Just like the sun can cause sunburn on your skin, it can also damage the surface and internal structures of your eyes. UV-A and UV-B rays contribute to a variety of eye diseases, some of which may not show symptoms until years later. These include:

  • Photokeratitis – A painful eye condition similar to sunburn, often caused by sunlight reflecting off snow, water, or pavement.
  • Cataracts – Clouding of the eye’s lens that worsens with UV exposure.
  • Macular degeneration – Damage to the retina that can lead to central vision loss over time.
  • Pterygium – A growth on the white part of the eye that may eventually block vision.

4 Benefits of UV Protection for Your Eyes

When it comes to eye health, prevention is just as important as treatment. UV protection isn’t only about comfort—it’s about protecting the structure and function of the eye for years to come. Reducing UV exposure can help support these patients in ways that go beyond surface-level protection.

1. Long-Term Protection

Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses can reduce your lifetime risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Since UV damage accumulates over time, every bit of protection helps—especially when started at a young age.

2. Support for Vision Therapy Outcomes

UV protection is particularly beneficial for children undergoing vision therapy. For children who are sensitive to light or working through visual processing difficulties, reducing UV exposure helps them stay more comfortable and consistent during their treatment.

Reduced Eye Fatigue

Bright sunlight can cause you to squint and strain your eyes, even when you're not aware of it. This strain can lead to headaches and discomfort—especially in people recovering from a concussion or dealing with focusing issues.

Safer Outdoor Activities

From recess and sports practice to weekend hikes, outdoor time is essential. Good protection against UV helps children and adults participate more comfortably and safely, keeping their vision sharp and their eyes protected.

How to Know if Your Sunglasses Have Proper UV Protection

Buying a pair of sunglasses isn’t always as straightforward as it seems. Labels can be misleading, and darker lenses don’t always mean better protection. Here’s what to look for:

  • 100% UV Protection: Look for a label that says “100% UV protection” or “UV400.” This means the lenses block both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Wraparound Frames: Opt for sunglasses that cover the sides of your eyes to block peripheral light.
  • Polarized vs. UV: Polarized lenses reduce glare but don’t automatically provide UV protection. Make sure the sunglasses do both.
  • Check for Certification: Reputable sunglasses will often be certified by standards organizations.
  • Don’t Rely on Tint Alone: Dark lenses without UV protection can be harmful because they cause the pupils to dilate, allowing more UV rays to enter.

Even though we don’t carry sunglasses at Focus Vision Development Center, we’re happy to answer questions and point you toward trusted resources.
